There are live screenings of classic movies, fun exhibits about the movies, and a permanent Jim Henson collection for those of us who are Muppets fans. It's a 15 minute subway ride from Times Square to Astoria and well worth the trip.
The New York Historical Society is hosting a series of top-quality interviews with filmmakers. I have attended Q&A-style "Le Conversazioni" with Paul Shrader (April 2024) and Martin Scorsese (May 2024). Look out for more events in this series.

Greg and Dan at NY Public Library run an excellent online discussion group for cinephiles. Each month they select a movie which can be streamed for free via NYPL's partner organization, Projectr. They do a great job finding films that are lesser known and yet cinema gems. Check out the NYPL website for details and to register for an upcoming discussion.
The New York Film Festival takes a lot of the limelight, but there are other amazing festivals going on in the city all year round.
One of my personal favourites. The 16th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival will take place in October, celebrating a wide range of films loosely associated with science. October 20-27, 2023
Billed as "one of the finest exhibitions of short films in North America", the 2022 New York Shorts International Film Festival featured over 340 short films, special events, talks, retrospective films, and tributes. Coming in October.

The Tribeca Festival takes place in June each year.
